AI murder mystery

Play an AI murder mystery with your friends

Yes, you can play a murder mystery with friends and an AI narrator. Make a room on splitscreen, send your friends the link, and Claude, OpenAI’s GPT or Gemini sets the scene, gives each of you a role and hands out clues while you question each other, until somebody accuses.

How it works

  1. Start a mystery roomPick the Mystery night template. Before the first scene, the narrator asks for your setting and tone, or offers three, and waits until you say you are ready.
  2. Invite your friendsShare one invite link. Everyone who joins sees the case so far, and the narrator gives each player a role.
  3. Investigate and accuseType @AI and what you do: question a suspect, search a room. The narrator plays one scene at a time and keeps the solution hidden until the group accuses someone or gives up.

What it looks like

Mystery night
  • Ines

@AI Start a mystery for the three of us. A country house, 1930s.

  • Claude · AI

Wren Hall, 1934. Lord Alder is found in the greenhouse at midnight. Ines, you are his niece. Tom, the gardener. Priya, the family doctor. Each of you has something to hide. Who do you question first?

  • Saved to Notes: Case summary, no spoilers. Wren Hall, 1934, three suspects.
  • Tom

@AI I search the potting bench.

  • Claude · AI

Under a sack of bulbs you find a torn guest-book page, the last line in green ink. Priya, you recognise the handwriting. What do you say?

An illustrative example. The people and the conversation are made up.

What you get

  • A narrator that keeps the secret

The narrator decides the culprit, motive and clues before the first scene and never reveals the solution until the group accuses someone or gives up.

  • A role for every player

Each friend who joins gets a part to play, and the narrator hands the spotlight around so nobody waits.

  • Fair clues and red herrings

Real clues are handed out fairly, with a few false trails, so the answer is there to be worked out.

  • Notes keep the case straight

A spoiler-free case summary lives in the room’s Notes, which every AI reads before every reply.

  • Claude, GPT or Gemini

Ask whichever AI you like each turn, or ask all three for a theory and keep the best one.

  • Your language

Write in Portuguese, Spanish, Korean or any language you like and the AI answers in it. The app’s own menus come in 28 languages.

Questions

Can an AI really run a murder mystery?

Yes. The narrator picks the culprit, motive and clues at the start, saves a short case summary without the solution to the room’s Notes, describes one scene at a time and answers when you question a suspect or search a place. It never decides what your character says or does.

How many friends do I need?

A mystery is best with a few friends. You can start on your own, and the narrator tells you to share the invite link when you want company. Everyone who joins sees the case so far.

Can the other players see my secret?

A room is shared, so everyone in it can read what the narrator posts. The narrator keeps the solution out of its replies until someone accuses, and each player plays their own secret in character.

Is it suitable for teenagers?

splitscreen accounts are for people aged 13 and over, and the narrator is set up to keep games suitable for teens.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. splitscreen runs in the browser on a phone, a laptop or a tablet, with nothing to install.

What does it cost?

It is free to start: every account gets 50 free AI replies a day on fast models (GPT-6 Luna, Claude Haiku and Gemini Flash-Lite) once you verify your email. For stronger models, buy credits from $5 a pack. Or one person gets Squad for $15 a month: the whole $15 comes back as credit (about 1,600 smart replies a month), and friends in your rooms get stronger models from your credit, with a daily limit each. You can also bring your own API key, with no markup.
